There’s been a lot of online speculation about Ella Yelich O’Connor aka Lorde’s real age since she debuted with ‘Royals’ back in 2012 – and now it’s finally been settled. It turns out that the birth certificate unearthed by an online site called, The Smoker’s Gun, which claims that Lorde was born Ella Marija Lani Yelich O’Connorov on November 7, 1980 in Russia, was actually an April Fool’s joke. Yes, everyone’s favourite precociously talented teenager is infact a teenager from New Zealand, which still makes her the country’s biggest claim to fame since Keith Urban (who is technically Australian, but we’ll let them have him).
The website called The Hairpin, managed to purchase a copy of Lorde’s birthday certificate, which clearly states her D.O.B as the 7th November 1996. If you think about it, it does make sense that Lorde has been honest with her age. After all, who would want to be 17 again?
You can’t blame people for speculating though, considering Lorde (who will be in Australia next month for a tour), has been evasive about her age in a series of recent interviews. “Hi, I’m Ella,” she told Vanity Fair back in January, “and I’m actually 45.” She also told Rookie’s 35-year-old 17-year-old editor Tavi Gevinson that Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides “really resonated with me as a teenager”, before immediately correcting, “I mean, I am still a teenager.”
Make of that what you will. Either way, Lorde has still proven to be one of the most talented musicians of our time.
