It’s a rare moment to have musicians and politicians converse in one segment. Infact, it’s unlikely to even hear musicians talk about politics or political matters. So when you hear conservative politician Tony Abbott and progressive pop sensation, Katy Perry, chatting on the morning radio segment ‘The Kyle and Jackie O Show’ on 2day Fm, some sparks are bound to fly…and boy were there sparks (no, not the good kind)!
Opposition leader, Tony Abbott, began the segment by
sucking up interviewing Katy Perry, gushing “My daughters think you’re the most wonderful singer. I’m very happy to take a bit of time off the election to ask the big question…when are you coming back, we need you, we want you. When are you coming back?”
Katy Perry, however, turned the tables by discussing the issue of legislating same-sex marriage, “Come on that’s not a political question,” she said. “Let’s talk about gay marriage.” A surprised Abbott replied, “Now you’re interviewing me Katy”. “Yeah buddy, that’s right,” she responded. “Love is equal.” She then continued (to Abbot’s dismay) with “Well I love you as a human being, but I can’t give you my vote then. I still want to meet your daughters.”
But Abbott didn’t stop there, still pursuing Katy’s vote, “My daughters are fabulous and they would be so excited to meet you, they are desperate to have you,” he replied. “I was introduced to one of your numbers, “Hot and Cold”, and I thought, maybe that can be my anthem.” Again, Katy Perry didn’t buy it and laughed it off, “I don’t know if that’s the best song we can pick for a politician,” she said. “Let me just say I will be in Australia very soon, let’s just say I will be in Australia this year.”
Abbott may not have gotten Katy Perry’s vote but at least he got his answer. And being a big Katy Perry fan, he should be excited and pleased with that…right, Abbott?
