EMC: Asia-Pacific’s first Electronic Music Conference!

As an official part of ARIA week Sydney hosted its first inaugural Electronic Music Conference (EMC).

Taking place at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf, Nov 27-28 the conference saw some of the most influential names in electronic music gather to discuss numerous issues and topics relating to the Electronic Dance Music industry today.

Australia has been one of the leading markets in dance music for more than a decade.

Taking in over $75 million dollars annually from over 750,000 people attending dance music festivals and with Australians starting to make their mark on the international industry, its about time Australia hosted its own conference to bring the scene together and cement its place in the global market.

Hosted by Sound Alliance (inthemix, Fasterlouder and The Hype Machine)

EMC hosted Masterclasses, keynotes, round table discussions and of course some amazing showcases of emerging and established artists.

Day one opened with Australia’s own Grant Smillie leading a keynote discussion with industry heavyweight Tiesto.

The legendary DJ revealed it takes 35 people to run ‘Team Tiesto’ but he only works with people who are ‘hungry and eager to work with him.”

When asked about this transition from trance to playing the likes of Avicii and Porter Robinson, ” it was a very organic process, I just started liking other music more then trance music. Some fans stuck with it others left, but new fans came.” Although he insisted there was no possibility of an RnB collaboration “that’s up to David Guetta and Calvin Harris.”

Laidback Luke was joined by Nina Las Vegas, Goodwill, & Sam La More for the round table discussion “Beyond Button-pushing: What makes a DJ?” which sparked some interesting comments towards Deadmau5 with Goodwill calling him a “legend manipulator. He probably doesn’t even know what real djing is”

You can watch the entire discussion here…

Other topics up for discussion included: Underground music, Social media, legal agreements, Surviving as a label, EDM explosion in America, Does EDM need its own industry body? Selling out and the future of Festivals.

These topics were discussed in depth by industry heavyweights such as: Jack Tregoning (inthemix) Scott Commens (Subsonic) Simon Caldwell (Mad Racket) Dan Rosen (ARIA) Stephan Pavolvic (Modular) Tim Mcgee (Ministry of sound) Tommy Trash, Mike Brown (Twitter) Ken West (Big Day Out) and many more…

Moshtix presented the Emerging Artists Showcase at Marquee to close the first day with the line up chosen from hundreds of applications to find the best up-coming EDM artists.

The Chosen six were: The Kite String Tangle, Arcane Revolver, Blunt B, Big Dumb Kid, Laancelot and the Rodskeez.

Day 2 Opened with a controversial discussion on the role of DJ’S with Tommy Trash, Diplo, Nina Kraviz, Matt Stafford and Marlo, moderated by inthemix’s Jack Tregoning.

With comments such as “A lot of DJ’s don’t write their own records but they are still their records”-Diplo if you were not there you definitely want to keep an eye out for the video, uploaded soon to the EMC website.

The conclusion of EMC was Celebrated at The IVY Pool, artists included: Nina Kraviz, The Knocks, Ivan Gough, Feenixpawl, The Only, Peking Duk, Tom Piper and Walden.

EMC was an all round success from the organisation to the calibre of speakers, and is a necessity on your calendar next year for those in the dance music industry!
