Phillip Island will be getting a new dance-based festival for NYE this year, Beyond the Valley

Even among dismal announcements for Australian festivals in recent weeks, there is still hope for the national live music scene with the announcement of Beyond the Valley, which will take place on Phillip Island over December 30th and 31st starting this year.

The line-up is expected to be announced sometime next month, but the video below should give some idea to the style of the event. The free-born Native American-style costumes and modern soundtrack by British electronic duo AlunaGeorge hints to the event targeting the young, typically Triple J-listener market overlooked in recent years by the failing Big Day Out.

Perhaps Beyond the Valley reflects an attempt to fill the huge hole left by BDO’s departure, for 2014 at least. We’ll have to wait until the lineup is announced before we decide where BtV stands in the Australian festival scene, but we’re very excited nonetheless.

Iggy gets jiggy in Ariana Grande’s ‘Problems’ music video

Coming off her latest hits, ‘Fancy’ and ‘Work’, Iggy Azalea has been featured in teen pop sensation Ariana Grande’s new music video ‘Problem’. The video features both Iggy and Ariana in a retro 60’s throwback, filled with knee high boots and stripes galore. The video has been released a month after the official release of the song, which rose to number 2 on the Hot 100 charts. Iggy Azaela joins the ranks of the Beatles as the only artists to rank at both No. 1 and 2 simultaneously on the Hot 100 charts.

Martin Garrix new resident Dj of BBC Radio 1’s

Garrix – the Dutch wunderkind behind 2013’s runaway hit Animals – was announced as one of BBC Radio 1’s new roster of resident DJs, alongside Tiesto, Bromance founder Brodinski and trance name Simon Patterson. On Thursday night, London time, Garrix stepped up for his first Radio 1 show and over one hour, the 17-year-old worked through a selection of the tracks he’s been enjoying. Radio 1 is a big influential station for dance music around the world.

“Radio 1 are big supporters of my track Animals and are taste makers in the world when it comes to dance music on the radio,” he said when the residency was first announced. “I’m excited to be a part of that.”

Unsurpisingly, Garrix’s label, Spinnin Records, features heavily on the tracklist, with handiwork from his label mates Firebeatz, Jay Hardway, Dubvision and Vicetone all making it in. But the first half of the proceedings wasn’t as main stage-ready as you might expect: before he picked up the pace and got stuck into his own material, Garrix also played less-frenetic tracks from Disclosure, UK singer Fox Stevenson and his Sander van Doorn and DVBBS collaboration Gold SkiesAnimals, however, was absent the whole hour through.
