and the winner of eurovision 2014 is …..

Austrian performer Conchita Wurst, who has come to be known as the ‘bearded lady’, declared the winner. She has attracted widespread praise and predictably homophobic criticism following her win. Wurst’s message at the press conference following her win: “This project is based on tolerance, acceptance and love.” She dedicated the award to “everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom.

Australia’s Jessica Mauboy performed during a break in the competition in front of an estimated audience of over 20 million fans. Mauboy took to the stage to perform her new song ‘Sea of Flags’ which was co-written by Ilan Kidron (of The Potbelleez) and expat Stuart Crichton (who has written songs for Kylie, Delta, and Sugababes).

Phillip Island will be getting a new dance-based festival for NYE this year, Beyond the Valley

Even among dismal announcements for Australian festivals in recent weeks, there is still hope for the national live music scene with the announcement of Beyond the Valley, which will take place on Phillip Island over December 30th and 31st starting this year.

The line-up is expected to be announced sometime next month, but the video below should give some idea to the style of the event. The free-born Native American-style costumes and modern soundtrack by British electronic duo AlunaGeorge hints to the event targeting the young, typically Triple J-listener market overlooked in recent years by the failing Big Day Out.

Perhaps Beyond the Valley reflects an attempt to fill the huge hole left by BDO’s departure, for 2014 at least. We’ll have to wait until the lineup is announced before we decide where BtV stands in the Australian festival scene, but we’re very excited nonetheless.
