Australian music festivals

It’s well known that the U.S and U.K host a number of world renowned music festivals such as Coachella in California, and Brownstock Music Festival in Essex.  But what about the music festival scene in our own backyard of Australia?  Let’s examine three popular music festivals hosted in the Great Southern Land.

Big Day Out

This is an annual music festival held in five Australian cities: Sydney, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth, usually in late January every year.  Produced by Creative Festival Entertainment, it typically features seven or eight stages where mainstream international acts and local acts from genres such as contemporary rock music and electronic music perform.

 Defqon

Held in the Netherlands and Australia each year, Defqon was founded by festival organiser Q-dance in 2003.  The festival predominantly features hardstyle music, and its sister genres including hardcore techno, jumpstyle and hard trance.  A characteristic of this festival its its running time of twelve hours, from 11 a.m to 11 p.m concluded with a fireworks display.  The festival has been gaining popularity, with the Sydney event attracting as many as 18, 000 concert-goers.

Future Music

Debuting in 2006, this festival visits five Australian cities and largely features dance music. Future Music Festival is normally held in late February to early March and has been headlined by well-known acts including The Chemical Brothers, New Order and The Prodigy.
