Mount Kimbie

New Album release

Kai Campos and Dominic Maker of UK electronic duo Mount Kimbie like making up their own rules– even if that happens by accident. The pair’s 2010 debut Crooks & Lovers was specifically borne from UK bass culture and released on Hotflush— a label that continues to rewrite the parameters of the genre– but there was nothing hard-hitting or particularly dancey about the album. Instead, it explored small textures, meticulously cut-up samples, and clicking rhythms, carrying a constant soft hum along with its homemade melancholy.

And while many bass-leaning producers release material at a constant pace, Mount Kimbie have remained awfully quiet over the past two years, touring at a semi-constant clip but releasing little more than a few remixes since. While taking a break from studio work a few weeks ago, Campos explained that the pair had a difficult time working on new material while on the road, a form of procrastination that it sounds like he might regret at this point: “This was the longest I’ve gone without making new music since I was 15– making music became my job, and then I had no time to do it.” Full story here

James Blake

English song bird James Blake is a man of many wonders, you must be thinking hmmm song bird is a strange way to explain a male dub step artist- but song bird is a very apt description, this classically trained pianist is a man of ethereal talent. His enchanting mix of heavy piano chords and rib vibrating base and beats mixed with soulful and emotional voice is a wondrous combination !

Blake is primarily considered a dubstep producer and is frequently heralded as a leading figure in the “post dubstep” community, but he is also noted for his prominent soul influences. Blake was nominated the Critic’s Choice award by the 2011 BRIT Awards and the Sound of 2011 award by the BBC, and won second place in the latter. In addition, his self-titled debut LP, JamesBlake, was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize. Blake has also released material under the alias Harmonimix.

James Blake began his final year at Goldsmiths in September 2009 studying popular music while recording songs in his bedroom. In July 2009, he attended the Latymer School and released his debut single “Air and Lack Thereof” on Hemlock Audio. It was a firm favorite with Gilles Peterson from BBC Radio 1, and Blake was invited to do a special mix on Peterson’s worldwide show, which included an exclusive Mount Kimbie track.

Blake released his debut EP’ The Bells Sketch’ on 8 March 2010 on Hessle Audio, followed soon after by CMYK on 31 May 2010 and Klaierwerke on 10 October 2010, both on R&S Records. All three EPs were met with significant critical acclaim: BBC’s Nick Grimshaw chose CMYK as his Record of the Week, the title track of CMYK was ranked 24th on Frontier Psychiatrist’s top 40 songs of the year, and all three of Blake’s 2010 EPs were collectively ranked 8th on Pitchfork’s top 50 albums of 2010.

On 4 February 2011, Blake released his self-titled debut LP, James Blake, via ATLAS and A&M. Three singles were released for the album: ‘Limit to you Love,” “The Wilhelm Scream,” and “Lindisfarne”/”Unluck”. The album was very well-received by critics: on 29 September 2010, BBC’s Zane Lowe made “Limit To Your Love” his “Hottest Record in the World,” Pitchfork awarded the album Best New Music and ranked it the 12th best album of 2011 on their year-end list, and it was nominated for the 2011 Mercury Prize.

On 7 October 2011, Blake released his fourth EP, Enough Thunder, via ATLAS and A&M. Two singles were released for the EP: ‘Fall Creek Boys Choir,” a collaboration between Blake and Bon Iver, and “A case of You,” a cover of Joni Mitchell. On 12 December 2011, Blake released another EP through R&S ‘Love What Happened Here’. He has announced a number of small intimate tours for the coming year, Blake is an artist not to be missed your ears will thank you !

Mark Ronson

You could be forgiven for passing Mark Ronson’s too-cool-for-school vibe on the phone off as indifference. That is, until the conversation turns to the Summerdayze, Summerfeildayze and Feildayze-bound producer’s musical tastes and who he’s looking forward to seeing on the festival tour. Then, it’s hard to stop him talking. “I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Araabmuzik, Hudson Mowhawke, of course M.I.A. and the Chemical Brothers,” he tells inthemix in the lead-up to the New Year’s visit. “I think this year is a good mix of commercial and underground stuff. I think in the past years it’s been quite commercial, but this time there are a whole lot of great dance acts and some great hip-hop acts.”

But the super-producer’s unsure of what will go into his own set, mainly because he’s been busy in the studio with little-known names like Paul McCartney and Alicia Keys. But Ronson did promise, however, that the vibe of the set will be like “taking a journey through a glorious jukebox of best soul, dance and hip-hop from about 40 years, all put together. But I’m not just going to be playing a golden era set,” he adds. “I’m heavy on a lot of new stuff as well. It will be quite a mix.” check out the full ITM interview here
